On Saturday-15-February, the Bogota Senior Center welcomed the residents from the West View Tower Apartments who have been relocated since the fire on Sunday-2-February. Volunteers had bags with clothing and other items that the residents could use. These bags were labeled with the apartment number and filled based on the resident’s personal choice. Each resident were asked to inspect their bags and see if they approved of the items selected. The contents could be switched for other items and could be added to, from the many donated clothes available. There was also canned and dried food stuffs, personal grooming materials, along with toys for any children. One side of the Center held a selection of coats, shoes, purses, wallets and more accessories to choose from. Each resident received a number of gift cards that could be used for groceries or other merchandise that would be needed.
As more residents arrived, they greeted their neighbors from the building. The tenants took the time to catch-up on how each person was doing and expressed their happiness to see friends from the building.
There was also tables set-up that provided hot meals that could either be eaten their or taken back to their current housing to be enjoyed later. Volunteers would also help anyone who needed assistants to bring the bags of donation goods to their car. Volunteers also walked along with the residents to select clothing, bedding, food, and personal items.
Also on hand were members of the Bergen County Department of Human Services (DHS) to help residents find the services that could use. This was done in private rooms so the resident could have individualized attention. This also will aid the DHS to make contact with the residents for additional assistant.
Many items still available will be donated to the Borough of Leonia to assist their residents of the Apartment fire on Friday-14-Febraury.
Volunteers assisting the residents of the West View Towers included members of the Bogota Seniors, Students from Bogota Schools, Members of the Bogota Volunteer Fire Dept and Rescue Squad, and Elected officials. Food was provided by Luka’s Italian Cuisine along with homemade baked items.
As residents find a more permanent home there will be a call for household items, furniture, and basic home supplies. These will then be distributed to the families in their new location.
