On
Saturday-11- May the Village of Ridgefield Park Environmental Commission hosted
their annual Earth Day Event. This took place at Riverfront Park on the banks
of the Hackensack River. There were booths set-up by local organization to show
the benefits of a healthy environment both locally and worldwide.
Some of the displays were by the Ridgefield Park Environmental Commission Green Team, Sustainable Ridgefield Park, Neighborhood Composting, the Girls Scouts of Northen New Jersey, and Boy Scouts.
Outdoor activities were Archery supervised by the Board of Recreation. Looking at artwork by Students from Ridgefield Park Elementary Schools, and by Ms. Angelina Salgado. Along with fishing with the Hudson River Fisherman Association. Displays by local nature centers included the Teaneck Creek Conservatory, Flat Rock Brook, Tenafly Nature Center, Sea Turtle Recovery, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
Other groups were local health care providers and a store selling natural honey. Mr. Mark Rust provided live music throughout the afternoon. Captain Bill Sheehan of the Hackensack Riverkeepers offered boat tours of the river from just north of Riverfront Park to Carlstadt. Demonstrations were presented by Mad Science, Snakes and Scales, Reptiles and Raptors and the New Jersey Batman from The Wildlife Conservation and Education Center. This allow members of the audience to help with experiments or to see and touch wild animals close up.
Ridgefield Park Mayor Mr. John Anlian addressed the attendees and thanked them for supporting a healthy planet. He said that the park itself was one way that Ridgefield Park helps the environment by turning an old industrial area into a recreation space for the public to use.
