On
Saturday-13-April, the Isabel’s School of Dance held a Music Theatre Dance
Workshop. This was led by Ms. Hannah Gundermann from New York. Ms. Gundermann has performed at New York Theatre Festival, Lycic Theatre of Oklahoma, and Hersheypark. To start the class Ms. Gundermann sat down and talked with
the Students. She wanted to find out what they knew about stage, or movie
musicals. Ms. Gundermann also asked if they had seen any musicals, and which
one they liked.
Next, she did some warm-up exercises with the
Students. The number of members taking the class grew as new arrivals came in.
The group ranges from Pre-School ages to High School Students. Also Tap Dance instructor
Ms. Tara joined in.
After this, the class were shown some basic moves common to musical performances. Ms. Gundermann would show a series of individual steps, these were then put together to create a combination sequence. Then the younger Students repeated the combo, following Ms. Gundermann as she called which step came next. This was repeated for the older dancers. The lessons continued with more techniques being added for more complex combinations to be practiced.
Once the class was comfortable with training, everything that was taught was used to perform a number from the movie “footloose.” Again, the class worked on small sections at a time and added then together. As the movement became more fluid Ms. Gundermann asked each Student how the dance and the music made them feel. Some said excited, while others talked about being relaxed, or being more confident about themselves. She asked the Students to use those feeling to make a character to become as they danced.
They performed the song two more times and became more expressive each time. At the end of the workshop everyone was asked what they learn, and how they felt about what they learned, and themselves.
