Bogota Board of Education

 27-April-2023

On Tuesday-25-April the Bogota Board of Education held their Regular meeting for the Month. In his Superintendent's reports Mr. Damian Kennedy announced that the District will lease the building at 320 Palisade Ave. It is touse the space to create a stand-alone Pre-school Administration Office. Due to the growing amount of Pre-school Students this will allow a central office for the program. Another advantage will be to use the apartment units so they can become as part of a transitional program for Students 18 to 21 years old after the have graduated from High School. The Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives are to assist the transition to adulthood. Every day, students will be exposed to the abilities required to live and work in natural community environments. Students will also be able to participate in internships and job shadowing at local businesses.
Next Superintendent Kennedy presented the 2023-24 District budget to the Trustees. Some of the main points for this budget is: offering new contracts to Facility, Administration and Staff workers. The hiring of full time positions such a Middle School Nurse, Guidance Counselor, Social Worker, Basic Skills and Dance Teachers. Upgrading and replacing both Educational Hardware and Software in all the schools. Additional security measures, including a Class III officers in all building for both class time and events. And Capital improvement projects. The leasing of 230 Palisade Ave. will be financed by the State Pre-School Grant.
Superintendent Kennedy finished by saying the District's budget for 2023-24 will have a 0% tax increase. This would the third year in a row the school tax rate has stayed the same.
The Trustees then voted on the consent agenda. All resolution were passed by unanimous vote. Items of note were: the approval of forms and details of the school bonds voted for in the recent referendum. Approving the proposed budget for 2023-24 along with the lease for 230 Palisade Ave.  Other items were to accept the resignation of High School Math teacher Mr. John Sterling for his retirement effective on 30-June-2023

Garden Clean-up

 24-April-2023

On Saturday-22-April the Bogota Environmental Commission, Bogota Beautiful, and the Bogota Green Team held and Earth Day clean-up of the Bogota Community Garden. Using a United States Department of Agriculture, the Borough was able to secure funding to replace the existing planting beds.  Many of the frames around the beds are original to the garden since opening in June of 2016. Since then, another four beds were added for a total of 20 planter boxes.
Early in the morning Volunteers from the Bogota Recuse Squad, while members of the Community Garden started do build the new frames. The planting boxes will be a bit taller, wider, and longer for a better growing bed. In the afternoon more volunteers, recruited by Bogota Beautiful, arrived. Once that checked in with Ms. Isabel Bustamante a small introduction was giving. This was led by Ms. Danielle Fede who explained the goal for the afternoon.  The Ms. Fede assigned jobs that needed to be done. These ranged from clearing weeds and old growth, aerating the soil of planting boxes as the new frames were secure, and a general cleaning both inside and outside the entire garden. Volunteers ranged from entire Families coming to help with individual's and couples joining in. A number of people came in from outside Bogota to be a part of about 30 volunteers to be a part of this Earth Day Event.
While the entire project was not completed in one day, a good portion of work was done. Over the next few weeks, the remainder of the work will be finished to open the garden in May for the 2023 growing season. Planters are still available for rental for this summer.
For more information on volunteer to help finish the clean-up, or to apply for a planting bed please visit their website at:  https://www.bogotaonline.org/community-garden
