On Tuesday-22-September the Bogota Public Library held their first day for the Big Read 2020. This was comprised of several events. One was a live facebook Storytime with Library’s Director of Youth Services Mr. Tom Skrnich. Another was to create a list of books that the patrons of the Library would miss if they were banned from reading. This was done on the walk way in front of the Library. Contributors were asked to to write the title of a book that should be protect. This will be an ongoing project and will continue as long as the weather permits. Later that evening there was a virtual lecture of how Ray Bradbury created one of his most well known work Fahrenheit 451. This was given by Orty Ortwein of the Ray Bradbury Experience Museum.
Another event in association with the Big Read was the Library taking part in the National Voter Registration Day. Members of the Library staff were on hand to answer question on how to register vote. Library Director Ms. Chelsea Coleman set-up a table in front of the Library entrance to assist anyone in need. Ms. Coleman was able to check a person registration status as well was hand out registration forms, in both English and Spanish. Along with information literature, also in both Spanish and English, to help explain the process of registering as well as the number of different methods for casting a ballot for the 2020 General Election.
The Big Read for 2020 will continue until Saturday-17-October . This is sponsored by the National Endowment of the Arts and will focus on Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. The public libraries of Bogota, Little Ferry and Ridgefield Park are all participating with events through different events. Copies of Fahrenheit 451 are available in both English and Spanish at all three locations. There are also books that introduces the concept of censorship and how challenges to books occur for younger Students. These are The King who Banned the Dark in English and ¿Jugamos? en Espanol.
On Monday-28 September the Ridgefield Park Library will hold a discussion of Fahrenheit 451 starting at 7:00p. Registration is require, please contact them at: https://www.ridgefieldparkpubliclibrary.org/
