On Sunday-7-June Bogota Beautiful held their annual spring freshening of the Planters located on W. Main St. Originally scheduled to be apart of the Bogota Earth Day event, it needed to be postponed to a later date. Motivated by the removal of the old vegetation by Councilwoman Daniele Fede, a group of volunteers were quickly organized to perform the second step of the Spring cleaning. Approximately a dozen people joined in to refresh the planters and add new flowers. The volunteers were grouped together and each pair was assigned a planter to work-on. This allowed everyone to maintain a safe distance while working.
The process was to remove the rest of the old plants, any debris and a layer of last seasons soil from the planters. With the area cleaned, fresh potting soil was added and mixed together. The flowers planted this year included a Salvia located in the center of the planter. The focus plant was then ringed with Marigolds and Begonias to add more colour. A final layer of mulch was spread around to aid in moisture retention, and reduce weed infestation. At the end members of the Bogota Rescue Squad provided a substantial first watering. The afternoon ended with the volunteers cleaning up around the planters and posing for a “group” photo.
