On Saturday-5-October the Bogota Public Schools opened their doors to the Alumni taking part in the 125th Homecoming weekend. There was a buffet breakfast served in the Cafeteria of the Bogota High School. This started the experience of some of the changes made at the school. From the murals on the wall of the Senior Class over the last few years to an upgraded serving line. The Alumni took stock of where they were and planned their next move. A number of current Student were on hand to be guides and answer a few question. The younger Students also asked questions of the visitors. One of the most talked about topic was the uniform code. Most of the underclassmen said that the polo shirts were alright , but they had issues with the pants. The Alumni then explained that up until the 1970's the while there was not a mandatory uniform there was a code that need to be followed. Men could only wear a button down, collared shirt, short sleeves were allowed in the late Spring. They needed to be tucked in to the pants. The pants needed to be belted and absolutely no denim. The Women needed to wear dresses or long enough shirts and blouses. All Student could only wear sneakers as part of Gym class. No heel could be too high. hearing this the co-ed's decided the khaki pants may not be so bad. The Alumni wonder where the shops and Home Ec. had been moved to, with the answer that those have not been in the building for a long time.
As Alumni roamed the halls they tried to figure which room held the classes they attended. They were told some of the classrooms has either been cut down to allow others to be expanded, or just remade for new subjects. Some were shown the new backyard exercises space, taht was to allow Student to leave the Cafeteria for lunch, and to even get a few games of Basketball in before returning to class. Alumni were also told how in paving the back led to the refurbishment of Speary Gym. Drainage for the back was causing the gym floor to peak at the South end. Visitors remarked at the brightness of the new floor. The clean look of the championship banner. And bleachers that could not cause splitters anymore.
This would be repeated at Steen and Bixby schools even more so since the expansion of both building in the late 1990's. And many just were sorry that Dewey School is now the site of Apartments.
