On Wednesday-1- May the Bogota VFW Post 5561 held their annual Loyalty Day event. The program began with Bogota High School Student Gabrielle Cintron sang "America the Beautiful" to those in attendance. Then Post Commander Alexander Hernandez talk about the meaning of the US Constitution to the citizens of the United States. After his comments he invited Bogota Mayor Chris Kelemen to address the audience. During his talk he presented Commander Hernandez with a plaque from the Mayor and Council to recognize his work to serving the Veterans of the Borough of Bogota. Also speaking to the audience was Councilman Thomas Napolitano and Connie Carpenter.
Next was the presentation of the awarded winners in their "Patriot's Pen" writing contest. This is open to Students in 6st to 8th grade. The second award was the " Voice of Democracy" which is open to High School Students. This year's theme for the Patriot's Pen was " Why I Honor the American Flag". The winners in the Patriot's Pen was from, Bogota High School Violet Radcliffe. From St.Joseph's School Krystyng Padilla, Kenneth Kalman, an Marisol Ardoleda. This year's theme for the Voice of Democracy was " Why my Vote Matters". The winner of the Voice of Democracy was Sheh Baz Uddin from Bogota High School. All the winner in attendance readed their essay to the audience. They were then presented with a certificate appreciation, and a check for $100.00 to each of the winners.
The program ended with Commander Hernandez leading those in attendance with the singing of patriotic songs.
