Reading Buddies

    On Monday-6-February the Bogota Public Library held their first Reading Buddies for February.  This is a program where older Students assist younger ones with their homework and reading skills. On this day several Sixth Grade Student were on hand to offer guidance on how best to answers question about their school assignments. In pairs, or in a single session, the younger Students were shown what to look for in questions about math and how to think about different ways to solve problem.  The Volunteer Buddies broken down the math problems into step by step ways which allowed the homework to become easier to finish. The younger Students were also shown how to check  that their answers were correct before moving on to the next problem. 
  The first part was devoted to math, then the next part the Volunteer help with reading.  Each Student need to complete twenty minutes of reading for their school assignment. Some had books that they brought from home, while others, with their Buddy, looked for something interesting from the Library shelves. The younger Students were excited to show their reading skills to their older partner, while the Buddies listen to the story. The Volunteer stayed focus on what was being read to them, sometime helping to pronounce a new, or difficult work. After each story was completed both the reader and listener talked about what it was about and why they choose that book this time. The older Students offered encouragement and  congratulations to the younger ones to help them learn the joy of reading.
   The Reading Buddies program will take place every Monday and Wednesday between 3:30-4:30p when the Library is open. Buddies will meet in the Nikki Spiegel Children's Area. Students looking for may come in and ask for a Buddy to work with. Any older Student who wishes to volunteer their time to become a Reading Buddy should contact the Library at:
