Junior Olympics

   On Saturday 19-November the Bogtoa Public Library held another in their Special Olympics Young Athletes series.  This is a program to encourage younger Students to start to developed  Their motor skills though playing of games. This program also allows them the opportunity to improve their use of language and aid in social interaction. The Students were given a number of challenges to preform on a course that was set-up on the second floor Seniors Centre. They Athletes were started off on a bag toss in which they needed to ask for which colour bag they wanted, and what number they were trying to throw it at. Next they had to crawl through a tunnel in order to have a chance to shoot a basketball into hoops of different heights.  After that they needed to show their balancing skills by walking on foam beams placed in a square, then finished by kicking a soccer ball into a goal.  This course was repeated as many time the Athletes would like, in the time provided. The Athletes were guided by volunteers of the Bogota Library, along with other volunteers from the Special Olympics. Some Athletes were able to compete on the course with their Parents with them. This allowed them to have the support and help of their Parents, along with the chance of having more Family play time. Others Athletes use this as an opportunity to show their Parents what they can do on their own.   

   These training session have been extended to once a month through March of 2017. There are two groups available to be a part of. The early group is for Students aged 2-4 years. This session will start at 10:30. The next session is for Student aged 5-7 and will begin at 11:15.  These will take place the third Saturday for the next  four months. This is a free event, but anyone attending is asked to register with the library in advance for each session.
