On Tuesday 18- August the Bogota Public Library Smartypants Lecture series hosted a resume writing workshop. This was presented by Rachel Cohen a career counselor, with her own counseling service for the past five years, and also works at Columbia University as a Career Development Officer. Ms. Cohen talked about even if a person is not actively seeking employment in order to change companies , or just reentering the work pool an up to date resume is important. She showed basic resume formatting. The most recent, or current, job first then in reverse order of time. A most recent job that is closely related to a position that is being applied for should take precedent over most other jobs.
Her next point was the importance of listing skills a person has. Including, but not limited to, Computer skills, stating which programs are an applicant's strongest, even what type of foreign language the applicant can speak. Again those skills that closely relate to the position being applied for should be at the top of the list. Ms. Cohen informed the attendees that all resumes whether they are paper , or electronic will be scanned, or downloaded into a computer system that will look for keywords in order to find out of the applicants resume will earn more evaluation. This is the normal practice in large corporation and now even smaller businesses. So the more relevant keywords the greater the chance increased to move to the next step.
One of her final points was to edit one's resume for all spelling, and grammar errors. Ms. Cohen strongly suggested that another person proofread a resume before sending it with an application.
