For the fourth year the Wildlife Conservation & Education Center of Ridgefield Park will sponsor Batstock. This is an annual three day event to bring awareness to the need for protect a healthy bat population for Northern New Jersey, as well as all of North American. "Bat stock" a three day festival of Peace, Love, and Bats started in 2011 by Joe D’Angeli of the Wildlife Conservation & Education Center of Ridgefield Park to raise funds to help find a cure for " White Nose Syndrome" (WNS). The condition of White Nose Syndrome is a disease first discovered in New York caves around 2006 and is causing a decline in the bat population in the Eastern part of the United States. WNS is a fungus infection which cause a white growth on the nose of hibernating bats. This causes the bats to awaken in midwinter and look for food. Since most bats food is not available in the colder months these bats will starve to death, or circum to the cold weather on the outside of their cave. The fungus also damages some of the connective tissue, muscle, and skin of those bats infected.
With a decline in the bat population there will be an increase in the growth of many flying insects including moths, beetles, and mosquitoes. An increase of these insects can affect an area in multiple ways. Some effects can be the destruction of crops, and native plants along with the spreading of human disease like " West Nile Virus" and general discomfort from mosquitoes bites.
